Paper mills are notorious for generating intense odors, especially during hot weather. The main sources are anaerobic tanks, sludge dewatering areas, and waste residue storage zones. These areas release high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, ammonia, and other volatile organic compounds. The problem is worsened by the high sulfur content in paper fibers and the presence of microbial sludge that ferments under heat and moisture. The result is a foul smell that affects workers, spreads to neighboring communities, and can even cause off‑spec final products.
A typical paper mill processes around 3,000 m³ of wastewater per day. The customer required a solution that is highly effective, safe for human contact, and low in operating cost. Traditional chemical masking agents were not an option because they only cover odors temporarily and may introduce harmful residues.
Our plant‑based industrial deodorant was selected for a field trial. The solution uses natural plant extracts from mint, citronella, tea polyphenols, eucalyptus, camphor, and lavender. Instead of masking, these active ingredients chemically neutralize odor molecules such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and mercaptans, converting them into harmless compounds like water and simple salts.
For the sludge and waste residue area, we installed an automated misting system. The deodorant is diluted 50–200 times with water and sprayed intermittently using pulse nozzles. For the wastewater biological treatment section, we arranged high‑pressure atomization pipelines with timed spraying intervals. This approach proved more cost‑effective than direct dosing into the liquid stream.
In a real case at a large Guangdong paper mill, the main odor sources – primary settling tank, aerobic basin, sludge thickener, SBR tank, and filter press room – showed significant improvement. Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia levels dropped dramatically. The plant manager reported that after using our odor eliminator industrial, the smell was greatly reduced, and the working environment became noticeably fresher.
