Coal chemical wastewater is one of the most challenging industrial effluents to treat. It contains high concentrations of phenols, ammonia, cyanides, and refractory organics, along with high salinity, deep color, and poor biodegradability. In a recent trial, a coal chemical plant producing 800 cubic meters per day of such wastewater faced exactly these problems. Traditional pretreatment failed to break the stable emulsion, leaving high chemical oxygen demand (COD), intense color, and toxic phenols that inhibited downstream biological and reverse osmosis systems.
The solution was a targeted industrial demulsifier combined with a flocculant.
